BOOK EXCERPT FROM CHAPTERS 5 AND 6 OF THE HUNGER GAMES Katniss meets her attendants: Venia, Flavius, and Octavia, and her chief stylist, Cinna. There is not much time to lose that night, the 24 tributes are to be introduced in an extravagant, televised ceremony. The attendants frantically set on Katniss, waxing and buffing her for the cameras. Katniss takes to Cinna immediately. Typically, the tributes wear costumes for the show to represent the industry of their hometown coal mining, in the case of District 12. But Cinna has an unusual angle, focusing on the fire rather than the mines. To her shock, he gives Katniss a dress with a cape that he plans to literally light aflame. I want the audience to recognize you when youre in the arena ... Katniss, the girl who was on fire, he says. Katniss is convinced hes insane, but she puts her trust in Cinna, who has 1 final instruction. As Katniss and Peeta get in their horse-drawn chariot, he tells them to hold hands. Katniss obeys reluctantly, but she notices Peeta is more than happy to comply. The costumes, flaming and all, are a hit. Soon, the Capitol is abuzz with talk of Katniss the Girl Who Was on Fire. Even Peeta remarks, You should wear flames more often. They suit you. Katniss is at once flattered and alarmed by his compliment after all, hes just 1 more person plotting to kill her. Nonetheless, she decides to play along and kisses him on the cheek. The District 12 team is reunited for dinner the next day. They are waited on by an Avox a red-haired girl who Katniss recognizes from home. Before she can stop herself, Katniss blurts out that theyve met before, and Peeta has to cover for her before she gets in trouble. Afterward, Peeta takes Katniss up to the roof, and she tells him the story of how she met the Avox. While she was hunting 1 day in District 12 with Gale, she saw the red-haired girl with a boy on the run. She guessed they had fled from the Capitol. A Panem hovercraft appeared, killing the boy before pulling the girl into the craft. The girl screamed for help, but neither Gale nor Katniss did anything to aid the young couple. ...to be continued! About the Novel: The Hunger Games is a story about a dystopian society and a young girls sacrifice to keep her family safe. Told from the perspective of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic nation called Panem. The nation consists of a rich Capitol and 12 surrounding poor districts. Every year, an event known as The Hunger Games is held. One boy and one girl from each district is selected by lottery to compete in the battle to the death, with only one person standing. The story begins in District 12, where the lottery chooses Primrose to compete. In an effort to protect her sister, Katniss volunteers, taking her place. The story then follows Katniss as she journeys to the Capitol and enters the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is an emotional story of survival, selection, and overcoming obstacles. All of our content is aligned to your State Standards and are written to Blooms Taxonomy.
